For Black Women, Beauty Not in the BMI

Research suggests black women enjoy higher self-esteem than white women, despite heavier weights.
Despite weighing in at higher weights and reporting greater instances of overweight and obesity, black women are more likely than white women to enjoy high self-esteem, says research conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation poll for black women in America. While an estimated two-thirds (67 percent) of black women reported having high self-esteem, only 43 of white women reported the same.
While it seems that weight won’t stand in the way of self-esteem for black women, they also reported health- and financial-related concerns more often than white women did, Bernadette C. Marson, ACSW, LCSW-R noted. Marson is Vice President of the National Association of Social Workers’ New York State Chapter.
